Fontan Roman is a single weight typeface design based on influences from Trajan and Round Foundational lettering; both being lettering styles I studied, many moons ago, while at art school.
I’ve wanted to design a typeface since leaving art school but never had the time, tools, or patience. When I discovered BirdFont it was time to try.

Foundational hand lettering
I want to develop on this typeface further by pushing an even more calligraphic style in the lettering. I love the sharpness but roundness in the foundational hand and wished I had studied it in more detail while I had the chance under the calligrapher John Smith (yes, his real name), author of The Art of Calligraphy.
Update: Here is a version based on the traditional round foundational hand lettering
Introducing Fontan Roman
You’ll find a few alternative glyphs available for the Q and f as well as some of the more obvious ligatures.
Other typefaces you might like to try
Take a look at Round Foundational Hand Lettering which is also based on this round lettering

Download the True Type format of the Fontan Roman typeface and let me know how you get on with it. I will be updating in the future to make sure it has all the characters needed.
